Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you wanted to know about WebP compression, privacy and how this tool works.

About the tool

Are my images stored on your servers?
Absolutely not. Unlike other online converters, Free WebP Image Optimizer runs all its scripts locally in your web browser (Client-Side technology). Your images never travel through any external server, which guarantees total confidentiality of your data and graphic creations.
Why is the tool 100 % free?
Our business model relies on non-intrusive advertising shown during the download finalization phase, together with affiliate partnerships such as Canva Pro. This lets us keep the tool free and accessible to all web creators, bloggers and community managers.
How can I install the app on my phone or desktop?
This website uses PWA (Progressive Web App) technology. Click the install icon in your browser's address bar (or « Add to Home Screen » on mobile) to get a direct shortcut and use the tool like a native app, even offline.

About WebP & compression

Which WebP compression quality should I choose?
For standard web use we recommend a quality slider set to 65 %. This value offers the best compromise between file weight and perceived visual quality. For background or banner images you can go down to 50 %.
Is WebP compatible with every browser?
Yes. WebP is supported by more than 97 % of modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari 14+, Opera). For the rare older browsers, use the <picture> tag with a JPEG fallback.
Will WebP hurt my SEO?
Quite the opposite. Google itself developed WebP and strongly recommends it. Lighter images improve your Core Web Vitals (especially LCP), which is a positive ranking signal.
